Ha Long is literally interpreted as “Bay of Descending Dragons.” Before the 19th century, this name wasn’t recorded in any record or archive file. When mentioning the present-day Quang Ninh Sea or Ha Long Bay, old historic books often referred to them by the titles of An Bang, Luc Thuy or even Van Don. Not until the late 19th century did the title of Halong Bay look on a French Marine Map. “The Hai Phong News”, a French paper of the time, had an guide, “Dragon appears on Ha Long Bay”, reporting the following story: In 1898 a sub-lieutenant called Lagredin, captaining the “Avalanse” reported seeing a huge sea snake on Ha Long Bay. This was witnessed by many of the crew. Thus emerged the picture of this dragon that was Asian. Whether this look of a strange animal looking like a dragon resulted in the name of Ha Long Bay isn’t understood (Reference Quang Ninh: Art and Culture printed in 2002).
